Developing Leaders, Not Followers

We judge great leaders on the leaders they create.

"The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers."

Ralph Nader

I am currently working with a client struggling to grow because the organization has failed to develop its managers and leaders. I wish I could say this was rare, but I see it in more businesses than not.

Developing leaders shouldn’t be just a checkbox for any business that aims to thrive; it should be a core competency alongside your product or service. When a company commits to growing its people, it builds a culture of resilience, creativity, and sustained success.

Failing to develop leaders can have significant, far-reaching consequences for an organization. Without intentional leadership development, teams often lack direction, motivation, and the agility needed to adapt to change.

Consequences of poor leader development:

  • High turnover & low morale

  • Stagnation & lack of innovation

  • Inconsistent performance & accountability

  • Erosion of culture

  • Heavy reliance on outside hires

Leading Yourself: Set the Standard for Development

As leaders, we set the tone for our organization’s commitment to growth. By prioritizing personal and professional development, we demonstrate that growth is not just an ideal—it’s an expectation.

Developmental coaching isn’t only for others; it’s a mindset that starts with our own growth. When you commit to ongoing self-reflection, learning, and improvement, you model the behaviors that create more leaders.

Action Steps

  1. Engage in Continuous Learning: Dedicate time each week to personal development, whether it’s reading, training, or reflection.

  2. Seek Feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from peers or mentors to identify areas for growth and refinement.

  3. Set Personal Growth Goals: Establish short-term and long-term goals that challenge and stretch your leadership abilities.

Leading Others: Cultivating a Culture of Leadership Development

True leadership goes beyond the present; it looks forward by investing in people who will lead well into the future. Making leadership development part of your business strategy sets up your team—and your organization—for long-term success.

Make Leadership Development a Core Competency

When leadership development is an integral part of your business’s mission, it reinforces that people are as valuable as the product or service you deliver.

Action Steps:

  1. Create Structured Development Plans: Work with team members to outline growth goals and identify training resources or mentoring opportunities.

  2. Invest in Leadership Programs: Allocate budget and time for leadership development initiatives, such as workshops, coaching, and online learning.

  3. Recognize Growth as Success: Celebrate leaders who advance within your organization, reinforcing that personal development is a valued achievement.

Use Developmental Coaching Sessions to Build Leadership Skills

Coaching sessions focused on development, rather than performance alone, help team members reach their potential by providing guidance beyond immediate goals.

Action Steps:

  1. Focus on Future Goals: Use coaching sessions to discuss career aspirations and leadership opportunities, building a vision for each person’s future.

  2. Identify Strengths and Opportunities: Help team members recognize their unique skills and areas for improvement, fostering a mindset of continuous growth.

  3. Create Accountability Partnerships: Involve both parties in setting developmental goals, with mutual follow-ups to encourage progress.

Becoming a No Limit Leader

Developing leaders is one of the most impactful investments a business can make. When growth and development are built into the fabric of an organization, it empowers people to reach their fullest potential, ultimately creating a culture of excellence, resilience, and innovation. By leading yourself with a commitment to growth and leading others with the tools and encouragement they need to thrive, you’re not just building a business—you’re building a legacy of future leaders.
