Why Leaders Fail to Inspire
How to Fix It

"When your people stop bringing you their problems, you’ve lost them."
Leadership is not about authority—it’s about connection. Yet too many leaders unintentionally create environments where employees feel unheard, undervalued, and unmotivated. In this episode of No Limits Leadership, I sat down with Jen Halpern, founder of Soft Sell Coaching, to discuss how leaders can foster trust, build engagement, and balance high expectations with authentic connection. Whether you lead a sales team, an executive board, or an entire company, the key to success is simple: listen, engage, and invest in your people.
Lead Yourself: The Power of Awareness in Leadership
Many leaders unknowingly send signals that stifle motivation and trust. Jen shared a pivotal moment from her career: after years of climbing the corporate ladder, her own daughter asked, “Mom, if you love your job, why do you come home angry every night?” That moment of clarity forced her to recognize that she was not leading herself effectively—she was allowing a toxic environment to dictate her energy and well-being.
As a leader, you must be aware of how you show up daily. Are you leading with purpose and positivity, or are you carrying stress, frustration, and exhaustion into your interactions? Leadership starts with self-awareness, and your team will mirror the energy you bring.
Action Steps
Check Your Impact: Ask a trusted friend, colleague, or even a family member how they perceive your leadership energy. Are you showing up the way you intend?
Audit Your Alignment: If your work drains you, assess whether you are in the proper role or if adjustments need to be made.
Lead With Intention: Before stepping into a meeting, take a deep breath and set a clear intention—whether it’s to inspire, support, or challenge your team positively.
Lead Others: Set High Standards, But Build Trust
Many leaders struggle with balancing accountability and compassion. Jen shared the story of a military-trained CEO who set a strict 8 AM meeting start time. At 7:59, he locked the doors. Latecomers—regardless of their rank—were locked out. This single action established a culture of respect, responsibility, and discipline.
At the same time, great leadership isn’t just about setting high expectations; it’s about building trust. This CEO put it simply: “If you can't trust your people, they shouldn't be your people.” Trust is the foundation of all high-performing teams. Your people need to know that they are valued beyond just their output—that you see their efforts, understand their challenges, and are invested in their growth.
Action Steps
Set Clear Expectations: Establish high standards and hold everyone (including yourself) accountable. People rise to the level of expectation you set.
Ask Instead of Assume: Regularly check in with your team about their motivations, challenges, and goals. People's drivers change over time, and your leadership should adapt.
Recognize and Reinforce: Publicly acknowledge achievements, personal milestones, and effort—not just results. A simple “I see you” can build lasting loyalty.
Becoming a No Limit Leader
Leadership is about more than just driving results—it’s about creating an environment where people feel empowered to grow and excel. When you lead yourself with self-awareness and clarity, you naturally inspire trust in others. When you set high expectations while also fostering connection, you create a culture where people don’t just comply—they commit.
If you want to be a leader who transforms teams, businesses, and lives, start with this: Be clear, be present, and most importantly—be human.
Now, take a moment to reflect: How are you showing up for your team? Are you building trust or unknowingly breaking it?
If you enjoyed this, share it with a fellow leader who needs to hear it. Let’s build stronger, more connected organizations together.
